10th September is UBOP’s 2nd Anniversary 9 月 10 日是 UBOP 成立 2 周年。
UBOP Turns Two!
Lead by the Sangha, the United Buddhist Order of Penang (UBOP) has been steadfast in serving the Buddhist communities in Penang since its inception two years ago on 10th September 2020.
Within the span of two years, its exemplary performance in managing Vihara BoonRaksa as a monastery under its care, speaks for itself. Under UBOP’s management, Vihara BoonRaksa has seen significant improvement in its building and land infrastructure. In addition, the dhamma-inspired landscaping around the monastery lends an air of peace and serenity, creating an ambience and environment conducive for spiritual cultivation.
In line with our motto “Together we care for the Sasana, Together big tasks are made easy”, UBOP has co-organize major events with UBOM, namely the “Thousand KM Dhamma Walk” and the Official Launching ceremony of UBOM.
As we celebrate our second anniversary, we would like to take this opportunity to express our grateful appreciation to the Buddhist communities – from monastics, societies and the laity who have been instrumental in supporting us in our growth and progress over through the years. Through this networking and collaboration, UBOP hopes to inspire and nurture the practice of Dhamma.
To know more about UBOP and Vihara BoonRaksa (the monastery currently managed by UBOP), please see this website.
May you progress in the Dhamma and may you grow in wisdom.
Entering of Vassa Day – Thursday 14th July 2022.
Asalha Puja is one of the most important Buddhist events of the year along with Magha Puja and Vesak Day. It marks the day Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon in Benares.
On this day Buddhists are encouraged to go to temples to do Dana, observe 8 precepts, listen to Dhamma talks, meditate and participate in traditional ceremonies such as the Wian Tian candle offering and walking around the Temple with a lit candle, lotus flower and incense. This ceremony dates back to the times before electricity where extra light was needed at the temple during the darker days of the rainy season.
Entering of Vassa for this year is 14th of July which is also the first day of Vassa, where Buddhists go make offerings (requisites for the rainy season) to the Saṅgha members signifying their heartiest and sincere support for the Saṅgha to strive in mental cultivation throughout the entire rain retreat.
It is hoped Buddhists everywhere will have a fulfilling Asalha Puja day this year.
Warmest Regards

Magha Puja this year falls on Wednesday 16 Feb 2022.
Magha Puja is an important Buddhist holy day in the Theravada tradition, commemorating an auspicious event that dates back to more than 2,600 years ago.
At that time, the Buddha had gained enlightenment for about ten months and was residing at the Veluvana Bamboo Grove near Rajagaha, on the invitation of King Bimbisara, ruler of the Kingdom of Maghada. It is said that on the full moon day of the month of Magha, according to Indian calendar, four historic occasions took place, hence Magha Puja also became known as “The Fourfold Assembly Day”, in which:
1) A total of 1,250 fully enlightened monks (arahants), came together to pay respects to the Buddha at the same time
2) All the arahants were ordained by the Buddha himself
3) All the arahants came to see the Buddha without any planning or prior appointment
4) The Buddha expounded the “Ovada Patimokkha” sermon, to the assembly of monks who had gathered there佛陀向聚集在那里的僧侣们讲解了“ Ovada Patimokkha”来传道。
We take this opportunity to encourage all those who practice the Dharma to pay their respects to the Buddha and remind ourselves to refrain from doing evil, do good and to pursue our commitment to self-purification. On this day, we can observe the Eight Precepts at home, practice meditation, recite sutras, read Buddhist scriptures and listen to the Dharma.

Launching of “Deva Messengers webpage” and UBOP Member e-Birthday Greetings, effective 8th Dec 2021:
Buddhism and the significance of the “Deva Messengers”.
An old man, a sick person, a corpse and a renunciant – these are the four sights or “deva messengers” encountered by Prince Siddharta which compelled him to renounce. Realizing that all beings, having been born, are subject to old age, sickness, and death, he is determined to seek an end to life’s suffering.
After a six year quest for the answer to human suffering, he attained full enlightenment by himself, effectively ending all suffering in his heart invariably, as well as all future births. Thanks to the four “deva messengers”, a Buddha has arisen in the world. The teachings of the Buddha are aimed at liberating sentient beings from suffering by ending the cycle of birth and death. Without further becoming, there will be no suffering of old age, sickness and death.
Where there is birth, the arrival of these “deva messengers”, (known as “Devaduta” in Pali) is inevitable – from the day we were born, we grow older every moment, and we have to face the threat of illness and death at every moment. All of these conditions are beyond our control and unpredictable. Hence, at UBOP, we are inspired to initiate this “Deva messengers” webpage to nurture a sense of caring and kinship in our community of dhamma practitioners. We seek your cooperation to keep us informed if you know about any UBOP member who is hospitalized, passed away, or struck by calamity. By sharing this information, we hope to provide a network of emotional and moral support from our UBOP community in times of need.
In addition, UBOP is also undertaking the initiative to send e-Birthday greeting card to members of UBOP. The e-Birthday card will be sent through email to each member of UBOP on the date of their birth to celebrate the special occasion of your precious birth as a human being.
May these “deva messengers” serve as a timely reminder, for us to contemplate on ageing, sickness and death. May we be inspired to walk the Path towards the Deathless, and the ending of all suffering.
